Jonathan "Juanito" Pascual
has been teaching guitar since 1991. In that time he has worked
with students of every age and level in Spain and the U.S, from
complete beginners to professionals from other styles of guitar.
He is a devoted teacher who brings a wide range of experiences in
and outside of music together with his deep desire to share the
tools that enable each student to access their full musical, artistic
and expresive potential. Juanito draws on the teachings of his maestros
including Adam del Monte, El Entri, Manolo Sanlucar, Parrilla de
Jerez, classical guitarists Eliot Fisk and David Leisner, jazz guitarist
Gene Bertoncini, and most recently, the great maestro Dimitri Goryachev.
In addition to his extensive musical training and performance background
he brings experiences from his studies in martial arts, yoga, Alexander
Technique, and various languages, to explore and uncover each students
natural and unique abilities.
Juanito's teaching, as with his playing,
comes directly from his powerful desire to bring the special communicative
and healing properties inherent in music, into the world, and into
the hands of those who seek to share in this magic.
Juanito's path as a player has led him
to many unexpected situations, including
a long term hand injury. This experience
has turned into good fortune leading
him to many influential experiences with
guitar teachers such as David Leisner
and Dimitri Goryachev, as well as with
martial artist Peter Freedman, and the remarkable healer Catherine
Larget-Caplan. Through his process of fully recovering from his injury
he has become a specialist in building students from the ground up,
removing, if not avoiding all together, the many impediments that can
line the path to full self-expression, on this wonderful (yet sometimes
challenging) instrument.
Juanito has spent the last ten years
analyzing and (with the indispensible help of so many wonderful
teachers) solving of the technical difficulties of the flamenco
guitar. Along with his understanding of technical issues he has
observed the unique problems posed to the non-Spanish student of
flamenco. Over these years he has formulated an approach, which
he customizes to each individual's specific circumstances, that
gives the devoted student access to the full beauty and expressive
potential of flamenco music, and to the guitar in general. He accomplishes
this by dividing the main issues of technique, rhythm, and listening
(i.e. familiarity with the style) into seperate and parallel tracks
of learning. This allows the stundent to comfortably master each
of these major components, which eventually lead quite naturally
into musically and technically grounded playing.
